TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO 6, MUSIC, SONG AND DANCE

Did you know that the Presentation Sisters were the first teachers in Newfoundland to introduce music into schools on a daily basis? Well they were and that musical tradition was carried on down through all the years and in all their schools, Province wide.  This post shows St Patrick's Pupils enjoying the music, song and dance opportunities on offer. I am grateful to all the people who have contributed these wonderful photos. Thank you so much for your help.

ST PATRICK'S CONVENT SCHOOL CHOIR, 1979

We have previously posted pictures of St Patrick's award  winning choir but I firmly believe that you definitely can't have too much of a good thing!  So, here is a photo of the choir that I found in the 1979 yearbook.  If you click on the photo it will enlarge so you can take a closer look.

Sister Brendan Lynch is on the left of the photo and Miss Eleanor Lawton is on the right, standing behind the piano.  Any other names that you can give us would be appreciated and, as always, you can send them along to us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com and we will add them to the post.  I hope the photo brings happy memories to mind for you.

MEMORIES FROM THE 1979 YEARBOOK

These pictures are all from the 1979 yearbook.  I am indebted to my niece, Paula Florey, for lending me her copy & entrusting its safe keeping to me.  These pictures are proof that the Schools run by the Presentation Sisters continued to uphold the musical tradition established by the first Presentation Sisters in Newfoundland.  It is recorded that the Presentation Sisters were the first teachers in Newfoundland to introduce music into schools on a daily basis.

Here are the pictures.  I hope you enjoy them and if you can help us out with any information, names, etc, please let us know at mcallistersmith@gmail.com.

Miss Eleanor  Lawton and a smiling pupil.
Can you name the pupil?
UPDATE:  We have just been informed that this 'smiling pupil' is actually Lisa Walsh.  It is so nice to be able to name the little girl.  Thank you Lisa.  I hope you are still making lovely music!

Are you in this picture?

Sister Mary Xaveria and a pupil.  Can anyone tell
us who the young man is?

Another Happy Musician!  We would love to
have a name to go with the photo.

Don't forget - if you can give us any names or stories about these photographs, we would be very happy to hear from you.  You can contact us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com if you can help with these pictures or if you have anything that you would like to have posted here on the St Patrick's Convent School Blog.

SCHOOL FRIENDS AND HAPPY TIMES

Our first two photos show the results of hard work and study.  Actually, it is the same photograph, flipped around to show the writing on both sides.  It is a picture of Carol Ann's Grade 2 Report Card.  Carol Ann  successfully completed Grade 2 and earned promotion to Grade 3.  Her Grade 2 teacher was Miss Barbara Myler. The School Principal was the lovely Miss Nellie Rogers who was taken from us far too soon.

WELL DONE CAROL ANN!
However, these photos from Carol Ann HAYES Kelloway prove that school definitely isn't ALL work and study!
Mrs Doreen Noseworthy's Baby Shower
Carol Ann informed us that this picture was taken at a Baby Shower given for teacher, Mrs Doreen Noseworthy.  Mrs Noseworthy is on the left of the photo and Miss Eleanor Lawton is on the right of the photo.  Mrs Noseworthy, a former pupil of St Patrick's, taught for many years at her alma mater.  Miss Lawton was a music teacher of long standing at St Patrick's.

PARTY TIME
Here are some of Mrs Linehan's 1979 Grade 9 Class.  They are all dressed up and more than ready to enjoy their Graduation Party.

Diane Fitzpatrick has given us the names of the girls in the Graudation Party photo.
They are L-R:  Jeannie Handrigan in the white dress, then Mary Dinn, behind in red is Diane Fitzpatrick, Kim Ducey Parrell wearing vest, next is Margie Moores then Helen Wadden.  Thank you Diane.

Carol Ann, are you able to give us names for any of the girls in the pictures?   It would be great if you could.  Anyway, thanks for sharing these photographs.  They are certainly reminders of of happy times.

AWARD WINNING CHOIR

St Patrick's Glee Club, April 1973
Were you a member of this award winning choir?  If so, I am in urgent need of your help.   The good folks at Presentation Archives inform me that this picture was taken at CBC Studios and the date on the photo is April 1973.  They are anxious to identify the students in this photo. The Pianist is Miss Eleanor Lawton, the Choir Director is Sr Mary Brendan Lynch and the Principal is Sr Mary Luke Parsley.  This Glee Club was a very talented one &, through its excellence, won a trip to Ottawa.

We would be very grateful if you would help us out with the names of the girls.

Also, do you have, or do you know of anyone who has, a recording of when you sang in any concerts, choirs, glee clubs, etc?   Our friends at Presentation Archives are gathering up any musical recordings or videos and digitizing them. So, if you have any recordings or videos of your choirs, they would be very grateful if they could borrow them.

Please contact us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com if you can help us to identify the girls or lend us your recordings or videos.  We will be forever grateful!

Just so you can see everyone more clearly, I have divided the photo into three sections.  I hope it will help you identify the students.

DID YOU ATTEND THE 1987 REUNION?

For these great pictures, taken at the 1987 reunion, I am indebted to Rose (Mallard) Ash and Louie (Mallard) Tucker.  Does anyone else have a story or a picture from that event?  If so, I would love to post it here.  Thanks again Rose and Louie.  Your help is very much appreciated!
