FIRST COMMUNION 1916, CONFIRMATION 1943

Still on the topic of First Communion and Confirmation, we have a Confirmation photo from the early 1940s and a First Communion & Confirmation Certificate from 1916.
Confirmation Time for a group of Holy Cross Boys,
circa 1943
This is a photo of a group of Holy Cross boys on their Confirmation Day.  The date is not certain but it is definitely the early 1940s and most likely 1943.  Notice their red rosettes which,  by tradition, boys wore at their Confirmation.  White rosettes were worn for First Communion.

We have just four names:
2nd Row:
6th left, Alexander (Duey) Fitzgerald
7th left, Derm? Molloy
Third Row:
6th left, John McAllister
Back Row
4th left, John Whalen
If anyone out there can give us some more names please send them to us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com

This is a First Communion and Confirmation Certificate in one and it records the First Communion and Confirmation of Ellen Josephine Williams.

First Communion &
Confirmation Certificate, 1916

A close up of the entry on the 1916 certificate

This is a very interesting certificate because it details three major events in the Sacramental life of a young Catholic. We see that Ellen Williams was Baptised in 1905, received First Holy Communion in the Church of St Patrick on the 10th June 1916. It doesn't give us the specific date of Confirmation but it does say that Ellen received "the Holy Sacrament of Confirmation in the same year", i.e 1916.

If you have First Communion or Confirmation photographs, certificates or stories that you would like to share with us, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Just send it along to us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com.

MAY RIBBONS AND FIRST COMMUNIONS

It is May again and, as the old hymn says, "the month of Our Mother".  In days gone by, everyone at St Patrick's Convent School, and maybe at every other Catholic School too, wore a blue ribbon and medal in honour of Our Lady.  There were May Crownings, May Altars,  and hymns sung in honour of Mary, the Mother of Our Lord.  How long has it been since you saw one of these?  Did you ever wear one?
A May Medal & ribbon.  It was worn, in times past, in the month of May in honour of the
Blessed Virgin Mary.
I am indebted to Lynn Miller for this photo.  It is quite a few years since Lynn wore this but, obviously, she has lovingly saved it as a memento of her school days.  By the way, Lynn was a pupil of St Pius X School but she comes from a very long line of St Patrick's Girls!

Sharron MALONE Peet has sent us two beautiful photos of her First Holy Communion.  Sharron tells us: "I made my First Holy Communion May 29, 1956. Monsignor Murphy officiated. I remember his black patent leather shoes with the silver buckles. They made a big impression on a little girl from Flower Hill."

I love the bit about the shoes!  If I am not mistaken, he also wore red socks.  Does anyone else remember the socks?  Msgr Murphy was our Parish Priest for about 25 years and I always thought he was very handsome.

Sharron's First Holy Communion Class
In this beautiful group photo, Sharron is in the second row, sixth from the right.  Can you name anyone else in the picture?  If so, please send the names to us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com and we will be happy to post them here.

Sharron's First Communion Day,
29th May 1956
This is a photo of Sharron in her First Communion Dress.  It is beautiful and we are so grateful to Sharron for sharing her happy First Holy Communion memories with us.

This photo is from a much earlier time.  It was sent to us by Frank McAllister.  Frank told us it is the 1946 First Communion Group, Holy Cross School. However, Frank neglected to tell us if he is in the photo.  Perhaps he could let us know and, hopefully, give us some other names too?

First Communion Class, 1946,
Holy Cross School

Thank you Lynn, Sharron and Frank for sharing these great pictures and memories.  If anyone else has a First Communion or Confirmation photo to share or a memento of school days at St Patrick's Convent School or Holy Cross School, please send them to us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com

17th ANNUAL KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVAL

Did you know that the Presentation Sisters were the first teachers in Newfoundland to introduce music into  schools on a daily basis?  Well, they were and it became an important part of the curriculum in their schools throughout the Island.  Perhaps we pupils, with our childish innocence, just took it all for granted, accepting the music, the singing, and the awards as just part of everyday school life.

Cathy Coffey has sent us a picture which is a happy reminder of the tense, scary, happy, exciting, wonderful  days of participating in (and winning!) the Kiwanis Music Festival.
ST PATRICK'S CHOIR, FIRST PLACE,
KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVAL
Cathy said:
"Here's a gem from the past! I recognize Judy Squires, Joanne Dodd, Cathy Handrigan, Jean Power, Michelle Squires, Karen Mugford, Moya Moakler (?), Rhonda Ryall, Michelle Evans, Denise Fisher, myself - Cathy (Taylor), and of course, Sister Brendan!!"
Thank you so much, Cathy, for sharing this lovely memory.  It really is a "gem".

This is a comment, from 'Anonymous', which was left in the comments section below.  To make it more accessible to everyone, I am adding it to the blog post.  Here is the comment:
"There were a few errors made when identifying the girls in the above picture. The girl in the glasses in front of Sr Brendan is Janet Peddle. To her left is Moya Greene and to her right is Louise Handrigan (not Cathy). Right in front to the left is Tish Mallard and the taller girl to her left is Ann Marie Tobin. The long blond haired girl right behind her is Jean Power. Denise Fisher is the girl with her chin cut off up front. Behind her is Michelle Evans and to her left is (I believe) Jean Power's twin, Joan. But I may be wrong on that one."

Thanks, Anonymous, for taking the time to comment.  Does anyone have anymore suggestions as to names?  I leave it in your good hands!

Another choir member has left a comment today (13 October 2015) & because it includes more names I am going to publish the comment here for all to see.  Thanks Teri Healey.
"I see my face poking out between the Mallard girl (who I actually thought was Helen, but I could be wrong) & Ann Marie Tobin. My name was Teresa (as the Nuns called me but I went by Teri) Healey, from Brine Street. Thanks for sharing the picture!!"

Madonna L Ryan-Gorner has left a comment with a little more information on the names of the girls in the photo. Here is what Madonna said:
"I agree with the corrections that Anonymous made, except for which Mallard girl that is. I was in the same grade as Moyà, Janet & Louise, and Tish was in our same grade. That little girl looks too young for Grade 8. The picture was taken in 1968, not sure if that was mentioned."

Thank you Madonna.

It is great to see that people are browsing the blog and still looking at older posts.  I have a comment from Helen Mallard Campbell that I am posting because it corrects the name of another singer. Here is Helen's comment "HI This is Helen Mallard and the Mallard Girl in the Pic Is Elizabeth Mallard my double first cousin. I am there too but you can't see me. Hope this helps Thanks." Helen, thank you for your help.

SCHOOL FRIENDS AND HAPPY TIMES

Our first two photos show the results of hard work and study.  Actually, it is the same photograph, flipped around to show the writing on both sides.  It is a picture of Carol Ann's Grade 2 Report Card.  Carol Ann  successfully completed Grade 2 and earned promotion to Grade 3.  Her Grade 2 teacher was Miss Barbara Myler. The School Principal was the lovely Miss Nellie Rogers who was taken from us far too soon.
CAROL ANN'S PROGRESS REPORT

WELL DONE CAROL ANN!
However, these photos from Carol Ann HAYES Kelloway prove that school definitely isn't ALL work and study!
Mrs Doreen Noseworthy's Baby Shower
Carol Ann informed us that this picture was taken at a Baby Shower given for teacher, Mrs Doreen Noseworthy.  Mrs Noseworthy is on the left of the photo and Miss Eleanor Lawton is on the right of the photo.  Mrs Noseworthy, a former pupil of St Patrick's, taught for many years at her alma mater.  Miss Lawton was a music teacher of long standing at St Patrick's.
HOLY CROSS PARK, 1978
This happy group is Mrs Broderick's Grade 8 Class enjoying an outing to Holy Cross Park, Holyrood in 1978.

PARTY TIME
Here are some of Mrs Linehan's 1979 Grade 9 Class.  They are all dressed up and more than ready to enjoy their Graduation Party.

Diane Fitzpatrick has given us the names of the girls in the Graudation Party photo.
They are L-R:  Jeannie Handrigan in the white dress, then Mary Dinn, behind in red is Diane Fitzpatrick, Kim Ducey Parrell wearing vest, next is Margie Moores then Helen Wadden.  Thank you Diane.

Carol Ann, are you able to give us names for any of the girls in the pictures?   It would be great if you could.  Anyway, thanks for sharing these photographs.  They are certainly reminders of of happy times.

GRADE 8, 1962

Recently we have been sent some excellent photographs.  I am very pleased  to receive them and am very grateful to those who have sent them.  I will get them all posted in the coming weeks.

Today's photographs have been sent by Sharron Peet (MALONE).  We have a great class  photo from 1962.  Sharron has also supplied the names.

Here are Sharron's photographs.  I bet they will bring back some memories for you!

Sharron, is this the cover of a Yearbook? If it is, perhaps you would share some of the pictures in it with us? I love the picture and the snow brings back a particular memory for me. One lunch time I, along with a couple of classmates, got caught having a snowball fight with some of our friends from Holy Cross. You can imagine the telling off we got. (Great fun, just the same!)

Is this the cover of a Year book?
From this picture we can see that the School Principal was Sr Mary Mark.  Sr Mark is now over 100 years old and is resident  at Presentation Motherhouse, Cathedral Square.

Grade 8, January 1962

Everyone's name, including the teacher's.
What lovely handwriting you all have.  I see from this list that your teacher was the amazing Sr Mary Luke.

Sharron has also sent some beautiful First Communion pictures.  This time of the year is traditionally the time for children to make their First Holy Communion so I will post Sharron's pictures in a couple of days.  So, as the saying goes, "watch this space".

Thank you very much Sharron.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

ST PATRICK'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM 1983/84

Today's post comes courtesy of  Kim Barrett-Doyle.  Kim has sent us this picture of St Patrick's Volleyball Team, circa 1983/84.

ST PATRICK'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM, 1983/84

The teacher on the right of the photo is Mrs Anne Pennell.  Wendy Power has been kind enough to contact us with some information about the teacher on the left of the photo.  Wendy has identified her as the Gym Teacher, Sharon Martin.  Sharon, who taught at St Patrick's for several years,  is a cousin of Wendy's Mom

I don't have any other names so I have my fingers firmly crossed in the hope of receiving some help from you good followers of this Blog.  If you can add any names or details please send us an email on mcallistersmith@gmail.com and we will be forever grateful.

***I am delighted to say that I have received an email from Kelly REARDON  Sampson.  Kelly tells us that she, Kelly Reardon, is the girl in the back row, next to Mrs Martin.  Kelly has promised to gather more names of the team members and send them to us.  That would be really great Kelly. Thank you very much for your interest and for your help.

Thank you Kim for sharing this picture and the memories it is sure to bring.  Thanks also to Wendy for the information about the Gym Teacher.  We are always delighted, and grateful, to receive pictures, stories and memories so, please everyone, search out your old photographs and send them along to us with a few details.  We will post them here on the School Blog and on its facebook page.

SR M EDWARDINE, (SR MARGARET SMITH)

Today's post is in memory of a well loved music teacher who died recently, Sr Margaret Smith (formerly Sr Mary Edwardine).
Sr Mary Edwardine, 1958/59
Sr Margaret  taught music at St Patrick's in the  late 1950s and early 1960s.  This was back in the days when Nuns were swathed in yards of black with only hands and face visible.  Fortunately, faces tell a lot about a person and Sr Margaret's face (and smile) told us that here was a Nun who, as well as being pretty, was kind and gentle.  It was no lie for indeed she was kind and gentle.

As well as wearing "Habits", Nuns also went by a "religious name" given to them when they were received into the Congregation.  So, we knew Sr Margaret as Sr Mary Edwardine!

Well, as we all know, everything changed after Vatican II.  Out went the "Habits" and out went the compulsory "religious name".  The Sisters were free to return to their Baptismal name  if they wished.  Along with many others,  Sr Edwardine chose that option and returned to her given name of Margaret Smith.

Sr Margaret served in various places in Newfoundland, imparting a love of music to many generations of children.  My own memories of Sr Margaret are of the children's choir at St Patrick's Church, singing at Requiem Masses (LATIN!), Kiwanis Music Festivals and those wonderful Christmas Concerts.  The photograph below was taken during a break in an after school practise for one such Christmas Concert.  Sr Margaret is on the left of the photo and the other Sister is Sr M Thomas.  The year was either 1958 or 1959.

Sr M Edwardine & Sr M Thomas

At the age of 92 years, Sr Margaret was called home to her Lord on Holy Thursday, 2nd April 2015.  A talented musician, a patient teacher, a kind and gentle lady, and a faithful daughter of Nano Nagle, Sr Margaret Smith will be fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to have know her.  May she rest in  peace.

HAPPY EASTER

These photos are taken from the 1979 yearbook.  They carry no captions so I am not even certain that they are Easter pictures.  However, they look to me like the girls are wearing their Easter Bonnets so I decided to take a chance and post them today.  If anyone can identify the girls or give us any details, please send them to us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com and we will add them to the pictures here.  Thanks in advance for your help.

What have we here?

The Easter Bunny?

It must be Easter!

A VERY HAPPY EASTER TO EVERYONE!

HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY 2015

How did we celebrate St Patrick's Day at St Patrick's in days gone by?  Well, thanks to Kim Barrett-Doyle and Craig McAllister, I have some wonderful old photographs that will give us an idea of how it used to be in the 1970s and 1980s.   (Remember, just click on each photograph to enlarge it!)
Kim's beautiful coloured photo is from 1984/85 and was taken at a St Patrick's Day Concert in the School Gym on Patrick Street.  Kim tells me that Christina Mallard Cooper, Connie Lambe and Pam Power are in the picture but she isn't sure of any other names.  Debbie Thomas Meyer has also supplied a couple of names.  Debbie says that one of the girls in the picture is indeed Kim Barrett-Doyle and another is Kerri Jones Smith.
ST PATRICK'S DAY, 1984/85
The rest of our photographs were taken by Craig at one of the  St Patrick's Day Plays that were for many years a fixture of St Patrick's Parish life.  These plays were put on by The St Patrick's Dramatic Troupe under the direction of the wonderful Miss Kathleen Hayes.  Hang on to your "Caubeen"now because here are the photographs of one of Kathleen's plays!
WAKE HIM UP!  THE CURTAIN HAS RISEN!
(Eleanor McAllister and ?)

OH GOOD, HE'S AWAKE!  I THINK SHE
IS ANNOYED AT HIM.

WELL, SHE IS DEFINITELY THE MAID!
(Doreen Healey, Shannon McAllsiter & ?)
COULD HE BE THE HANDYMAN?  AND WHO IS
THE GUY IN THE SUIT?  WE HAVEN'T
SEEN HIS FACE YET.

ANOTHER GUY IN A SUIT!  WE CAN'T
SEEN HIS FACE EITHER.

PALM READING PERHAPS?
(Joe Newman, Doreen, ?)
SOME OF THE CAST MEMBERS
(Tom Price, Mary Gosse, Doreen Healey,
Shannon McAllister, Frank Newman, Helen Molloy,
Joe Newman, Gerry Costello, Mary Downey)
I wish I knew what it was all about because it looked like a lot of fun.  I think we are missing some of the cast members but I can't be sure.  If anyone remembers this particular play, maybe you would be kind enough to share your knowledge with us.  We have some of the actors names but we would welcome more if you know any.  Those we have are: Tom Price, Doreen Healy, Eleanor McAllister, Gerry Costello, Shannon McAllister, Mary Downey, Helen Molloy, George O'Brien, Pat McAllister, Mary Gosse and Blondie Horan.

At these wonderful concerts you never got a chance to be bored because even between the acts there was top quality entertainment.   The next couple of photos are the young dancers who entertained the night of this particular play.  Again, I have no details of who they are but I am ever optimistic that someone can help us out.  They could be the St Pat's Dancers or they could be the Holy Cross Dancers.  Please, someone, search your memory for us?
GREAT YOUNG DANCERS!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?  I HOPE THEY ARE DANCING SOMEWHERE THIS ST PATRICK'S DAY!
I am really grateful to Kim and to Craig for sharing these beautiful memories with us.  Again, I hope that someone out there will be able to tell us something about these pictures.  If you are able to help us, please contact us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com and add to the pleasure.

I have greatly enjoyed doing this post and I sincerely hope that you too have enjoyed it.  To all St Patrick's people, far and near, have a very Happy St Patrick's Day!

REPORT CARD TIME!

I am very pleased that once again I am able to post pictures on the blog.  I don't know what the problem was but, thankfully, it seems to have been sorted out at last.  So here we are with some old report cards.   I hope you enjoy this post.

Thanks to Betty Simms for the first three Report Cards.  They are a record of Betty's work in Kindergarten.  The school year was 1951-52 and the teacher was the wonderful Miss Margaret Murphy.
Betty's Report Card for December 1951

Who's a clever girl then?

Good Bye Kindergarten!

For the next report card and certificate of promotion, I am indebted to Linda O'Brien Clarke.  I think these are lovely keepsakes to have, Linda, and I am very grateful to you for sharing them with us.
Linda's Report Card

Congratulations, Linda

Thank you very much Betty and Linda.  These are priceless reminders of happy days at St Patrick's.  (Well, happy once the exams were over!)  If anyone else has any reports or certificates, please send them to us at mcallistersmith@gmail.com and share the memories.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE

We have received a lovely email and photograph from Joan REYNOLDS Fogarty.  Joan & her school friends have had their Christmas party and she very kindly shared it with us.     The closeness and loyalty to one another of this group of St Patrick's girls is inspiring. They help us see the importance of maintaining the bonds of friendships that were forged in childhood and youth.  Also, all those happy, smiling faces tell us that there is a lot of pleasure in it too.  Keep it up ladies!

Joan wrote:
"We had our Christmas party last night at Rosemary ASHLEY Healy's home. We had a wonderful catered three-course meal, exchanged gifts, and had a wonderful evening together. There were fourteen of us this time."

TIME FOR ANOTHER HOLY CROSS PHOTO (EDITED POST!)

It is time to post another Holy Cross Class Photo and have I ever got a beauty for you!  It was sent to me by Dianne HAWLEY King and it belonged to her late brother, Roger, who passed away last December.  I think many of you will remember Dianne who lived on Water Street and then Sudbury St.  I am also pretty certain that quite a few of you will remember handsome Roger who was a real heart throb.  There were many 'heart throbs' at Holy Cross!  Here are just a few of them.

Another group of Holy Cross Heart Throbs!

***I am very pleased to edit this post because we have recently been given some more names of the boys in the photo.  Originally Dianne and I came up with a few names but Enid O'Brien has once again come to our rescue!  Enid and her friend, Jim Dodd, have been able to supply many more names for us. Jim, by the way, is one of the boys in this photograph.

Here is the updated version:

FRONT ROW, L-R:
Jim Dodd, Bruce Jones, Pat Casey, Damien Ryan, Brian Moriarity, Donald Dinn and Paul Duggan

2nd ROW:
Jack Power, Hubert Dunne, Bud Gushue, Pat Power, John Dewling, Kevin Martin, Jerome Dinn

3rd ROW:
Mike Kelly, Gus McGrath, Pat Ryall, Roger Hawley, Brian Leonard, Andy Samuelson, Mike Power and Tom Fagan

4th ROW:
Cyril O'Leary,   Ed Shapter,  Bob Perchard, Don Murphy, Bill Neville, John Anderson and Bernard Sheehan

5th ROW:
Stuart Rose, Gus Samuelson, Alan Murphy, Dennis Coffey, Bill Hynes

6th ROW:
Leo Power, Pat Downey, Brian Philpott, Mike OKeefe, John Whelan and Tom Wakeham

We don't know the year this photo was taken nor do we know what grade it is.  We are hoping that someone out there can help us with that and also with any of the names that we don't yet have.

***The previous paragraph is now redundant because, thanks to Gus Samuelson, we have all the names as well as the grade and year.  Gus informed us that this is a photo of the Grade 11 class of 1958.  Gus noted that  Jack, Pat and Leo Power are three brothers from Fort Amherst.  I rememebr them Gus.  Their father was the Lighthouse Keeper at Fort Amherst.

Thanks Dianne.  This is a great picture and if you come across any more pictures of Holy Cross or St Patrick's, please share them with us.  We all get a lot of pleasure from seeing old friends and classmates.   To Jim Dodd, a very big thank you for you help. Thanks also to  Enid O'Brien who is always helpful!   Last, but by no means least, thank you very much Gus Samuelson.  Whatever would I do without you all?
